Health Care EthicsDescription: This course will explore the conceptual foundations of ethical judgment and the ethical dimensions of science and medicine. We will pay particular attention to the global context for medical ethics, the search for ethical consensus, and the diverse national responses to ethical questions through court decisions, legislation, and codes of professional ethics. Specific issues include abortion, euthanasia, patient autonomy, human subject research, and access to health care, especially in societies where norms contrast with current American practice. And we will study justice in the distribution of health care, comparing several different national health care systems. 3 credits.
